Erik Knudsen talk review.

Erik Knudsen is a photographer/film director, born in Ghana to a Danish father and a Ghanian mother.

He came in to give us a talk about his work and how it might link to our current work, i think his work is very inspirational especially in the way he has used know words in a couple of the mini films as the everyday noises of what was going on around him were more powerful than any script could portray.
His work would have linked really well with the first assignment that we were given which was mixed heritage, however we were doing the second assignment at the time. He tries to show that poverty is not just limited to the poor, but can be found in many different places for example the lack of equipment to use on photo shoots that could be seen as a type of poverty.

He has created films called, 'Vainilla Chip', 'The Silent Accomplice', 'Heart of Gold', and 'One Day Tafo'.
His films incorporate the sounds of the environment and are rarely scripted, this is because the films tend to have more of an impact on the viewer without throwing meaningless words over the top. the film 'One Day Tafo' incorporates video footage shot by his father in the 50's. The film goes beyond the anthropological and socio-political issues that are shown in most films about Africa.

Jill Cole photographer, photo canopy.

Wednesday 18th January 2012,
Jill Cole came in to talk about her work over the past year within The National Forest.  She lives and works in North Yorkshire, when we first met Jill Cole her work revolved around humanely catching birds so that she could photograph them. She became involved with the photo canopy project when she was approached   by Chris Beech and asked to be the artist in residence, she says this project has helped to develop coherence in her work. she showed us a set of ten images to help us get a feel for what her work looks like.
Below are a selection of the images she has currently uploaded to her website from previous projects.

write and fold task. Photo montage.

For this task we were asked to create a photograph that involves a certain amount of different words.
We were asked to get these words by doing something similar to the consequences game where one person wrote a word then folded the paper and somebody else wrote the next word and so on and so forth.

We had to incorporate five different things and they were.
1. Write down the name of a colour
2. Write down the name of an object
3. Write down a random word
4. Write down a line of your favourite lyrics.
5. Write down a number.

the answers i got were,
1. Pink,
2, Roundabout,
3. Chilli,
4. 'Amazing just the way you are' from Bruno Mars' song amazing.
5. my number is 7.

It took me a while to try and work out how i was going to take this photograph, and i puzzled and puzzled for ages before a came up with the image i have now.
its not very good but with the time i had its the best i could do and as i was not sure how i was going to do it i literally just threw this image together.

Still life photography - food.

Still life photography is photography that is of inanimate objects, for example food, teddy bears anything that is not alive and breathing.

Spot the Difference.

For this task we have been asked to create a photograph in the style of a photographer of our choice, this photographer does not have to be famous, they can be a less spoken about photographer.

Must also include your work in progress so evaluating as you go along and also explaining how you edited.
Our research should come first and must be in depth before we take out final image.

Annie Leibovitz.
Annie Leibovitz is an American portrait photographer who is known for her intimate portraits of celebrities. She began her career as staff photographer on the just launched Rolling stone magazine. She studied at the San Francisco Art Institute where she was inspired by photographers such as Robert Frank and Henri Cartier-Bresson. I like the below photographs because they are very personal and you can see a side of the model that wouldn't normally be seen in a public setting.

She hasn't only photographed celebrities but other people to, but due to her working with The Rolling Stones magazine her work is based mostly on the celebrities.

My image.
Here is my version of the black and white image that is just above this one. I think it would be a better image if the back ground of the original image was black to begin with but i had to work with what i had  at the time. So i created a black background in photoshop and then cut my model out of the original image and stuck him onto the black background. I think that if the model (my brother) was looking at the camera it would look a lot more like the image i wanted to copy.

1st Guest lecture 28/09/2011

Today we were given a talk by Morris McGuire an artist, Andy McKeown new media artist and software writer (wrote the slipstream software) and Peter Walker a sculpture. They spoke to us about the slipstream software that Andy himself created.

They also spoke about a project that they were working on in near by Snibston called 'Transform insideOUT' where they are working on collections of images taken within Snibston and then projecting them up on to buildings. This project is funded by Arts Council England, the images produced during this project are taken by volunteers and local groups. the project is helping to peal back layers of history that is associated with the historic site. A series of commissioned events and artistic interpretations have been set up to help enrich the experience of visitors to Snibston.

Wednesday the 21st and 28th task Fantasy Landscapes.

For this task we have been asked to create a fantasy landscape within Burton, we could make it as obvious as we wished and our photoshop skills are essential. We are able to use whatever photographs we have taken. Below is my image for this task.

Research.
John Goto is a British artist who is best known for his photo-digital artworks, where he loads his images on to a computer and using a programme like photoshop to cut different elements from his images and merging them into another image, to create something completely different.

Pasturelands, 2000-2001.

These images, are examples of the images he has produced during his career.  They are all apart of the same collection called 'High Summer'.  This series of images portray the style of 18th century English gardens and 17th century french landscape paintings (Poussin and Lorrain).  He then incorporates modern day difficulties/problems for example the first image has images that portray the foot-and-mouth, problem that the British farms had problems with a few years ago.

My image is something similar to this in the way that i have taken elements from some of the photographs that i took when i was on holiday down south and edited them into a landscape image from within Burton. There are many differences between my work and John Gotos images for example my images is black and white and the majority of his work is done in colour. The work Goto creates usually focuses mainly on some of the issues that have gone on in society at the time of the image being created, my image is currently just an experiment, i like how you can take a group of images that are completely unrelated and mix them up to create something completely different and interesting.
